big five personality traits betting

big five personality traits bettingTo state the bleeding obvious, different people have different personalities.

And it stands to reason that people with a certain type of personality and going to be better suited and more successful at different jobs/skills/hobbies etc. – And I believe people would live happier and more fulfilling life’s, if they spend the bulk of their time doing things their personality is suited for, and avoiding things that it is not.

So you might be thinking to yourself right about now, that’s all well and good, but what’s any of this got to do with betting?

Well, it’s hardly a secret that the majority of bettors (roughly 98-99%) lose money from betting, and I suspect a large part of this lack of success has to do with there personality not being well suited to gambling… and they are therefore (in my opinion at least) wasting their time, and money, pursuing something that are never very likely to become good at.

Now, wouldn’t it be great if there were a way to quickly know if your personality was, or wasn’t suited to betting?

Well there is little test you can take (that takes about 5 minutes to complete) that can give you a fairly good idea.

It’s known as the Big Five Personality Traits.

If you’re interested in knowing all the details and history behind the Big Five Personality Traits, you can read the Wikipedia article on here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Five_personality_traits/

Basically, you take a survey that has a list of statements and you rate how much you agree or disagree with each of those statements.

Based on your answers the test will then rate you on each of the big 5 personality traits and tell you where you fall in comparison to the rest of the general population.

The Big 5 Personality Traits are:

  1. Extroversion
  2. Emotional stability
  3. Agreeableness
  4. Conscientiousness
  5. Openness to experience (intellect)

When it comes to betting, some of these 5 factors are much more relevant than others.

For example, how extroverted or agreeable you are isn’t going to have much of an effect on your potential to be a successful bettor.

There are two key personality traits that I believe you need to score highly on (a score of 70+) in order to be a successful bettor.

Those are:

Emotional stability

Betting involves many financial upswings and downswings. And being able to stay in control of your emotions, and not let the downswings get to you, clouding your judgement, is vital if you hope to have any success with betting.

Conscientiousness

People who score highly for conscientiousness tend to be organized, dependable, show self discipline, aim for achievement, and prefer planned rather than spontaneous behavior. All qualities that are very beneficial if you want to be a successful bettor.
